To beginners in the art of sword appreciation
Understanding the Japanese sword and knowing what to look for can seem like a momentous task to the beginner; however, it is not that hard. Itfs a step-by-step process and thatfs why we at Sokendo are more than happy to answer any questions that you have. It is our earnest wish that as many people as possible come to know what makes the Japanese sword a beautiful work of art and weapon.
One of the parts of the sword you could look at would be the hamon or temper line of which there are many varieties, each with its respective gworkingsh. A close look at these workings will reveal a multitude of patterns that create a masterpiece.
The Japanese sword can be divided into the following 3 major types, according to the era in which they were forged:
a) Koto type , End of Heian era (10th century) to Battle of Sekigahara (end of 15th century)
b) Shinto type , Early Edo period (beginning of 16th century) to Tenmei era (end of 18th century)
c) Shinshinto type , Bunka period (end of 18th century) to Haitourei (the 1877 decree banning the wearing of swords)
The Japanese sword has a history of over 1,000 years. All parts of the sword , from the blade to the tsuba (sword guard) to the saya (scabbard) , have been made by master craftsmen.
The swords on display at our store are worthy of belonging to a museum. However, unlike a museum where you have to gaze at swords from behind a glass barrier, at our store you can hold a sword in your hand and feel its might and presence.
(Please ask an assistant if you would like to look at a sword.)
